If your shed is full of half-empty paint tins, ageing garden furniture and broken kitchen gadgets, take inspiration from the winners of the 2012 Shed of the Year competition. Two thousand proud “sheddies” entered the sixth annual Cuprinol search for the most creative use of a shed. Property developer and TV presenter Sarah Beeny, who was one of the four judges, says: “Shed of the Year is a great inspiration and clearly encourages people to get creative with their sheds. Hopefully others will be inspired.” “This year’s competition has seen some of the quirkiest entries ever,” says Kathryn Ledson, Cuprinol marketing manager. So, the humble shed is no longer just a convenient place to store junk… it can be an important addition to your home. A huge Doctor Who fan since the age of 10, John decided to replicate a Tardis for storing his garden furniture and kids’ toys. “My shed is based on the current 2010 Tardis from the TV show,” says John. “It’s the largest design and therefore more practical for storage purposes, as well as being an attractive novelty garden feature.” John drew up his own plans based on photographs, using eight sheets of 8ftx4ft oriental ply, 18mm to 25...

3 Advantages of Using Pulsed Laser Welding for Mold Repair: Modern Machine Shop

Compared to TIG welding, pulsed laser-welding technology is said to enable faster overall mold repair time while maintaining higher metal hardness. Using pulsed laser welding, repairs to injection molds can be completed with the mold still installed in the press. This saves time compared to TIG welding, which requires the mold to be removed from the press, heated, welded and then hand-finished before being re-installed. Pulsed laser welding also can be used to repair milling errors with the workpiece still installed in the machine tool. Here, an Alflak 300 has been hoisted onto the bed of a machine using a crane. Pulsed laser welders such as this ALM 300 can weld a spot as small as 0.004 inch compared to 0.04 inch for a micro TIG unit, increasing weld location accuracy. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding has been the traditional method for building-up worn or damaged mold and die surfaces prior to subsequent hand finishing or CNC machining to complete a repair. However, pulsed laser welding technology, which has been popular in Germany for decades, is gaining acceptance here in the United States as an option for mold repair (as well as other welding applications). These welders f...

This year’s CeMat may have been quieter than previous years but companies still saw the value

This year’s CeMat may have been quieter than previous years but companies still saw the value in product launches and networking. Keren Fallwell reports The lead theme at CeMat 2016 was “Smart Supply Chain Solutions”, reflecting the growing trend towards digital integration and Industry 4.0 and it was a focus in evidence among the hoist and crane component exhibitors from around the world. Whether it was a “black box” for a hoist or a smarter remote control, the emphasis was very much on enabling customers to collect more data from their machines in order to increase efficiency and provide a safer working environment. Among those manufacturers that have developed a “black box” is Spanish company GH Cranes & Components, which launched its CoreBox at CeMat. CoreBox records all the lifting data from a hoist or crane, from the weight of the lift to the number of lifts as well as engine temperature and service and maintenance information. The data can be accessed via USB, or any wireless or 3G device. Marketing manager Garbiñe Guerra said there were about 50 in the market and next year CoreBox would be offered as standard with all products. Turkish manufacturer KM Kümsan produce...

Soft-shelled coolers aren’t supposed to work this well. The Hopper Two collapses nearly flat and will keep brews cold for a really, really long time. It’s not light (almost six pounds when empty), but let’s be real—nothing from Yeti is. If you want cold beer for hours, and a lot of it, opt for the Hopper Two. This 36-ounce vacuum bottle seals completely, so you can throw it in your bag without worrying about spillage. It comes with a leakproof lid, but if you prefer easy-drinking access, a straw and chug-cap top are also available. Of all the coolers in Yeti’s line, the Roadie 20 is the smallest and most packed-car friendly. The 19-liter interior is just the right size to fit food and a few beers for two people for the weekend. The Panga offers 75 liters of waterproof storage, thanks to the high-density nylon shell and Yeti’s famous Hydrolok zipper, keeping water and dirt out. We like the EVA foam-molded base, which gives you a solid platform when you’re loading gear. The interior has two mesh pockets,...

Sweeping changes to California’s Prop 65 chemical rules are straining the pockets and weighing on the minds of promotional products companies. When The Safe Drinking Water & Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 was on the ballot in California, Kim Bakalyar says she probably voted for it. If only she knew then what the legislation would come to mean for the promotional products industry over 30 years later. The legislation – commonly called Proposition 65 – lists chemical warning regulations for consumer products in California. Starting August 30, Prop 65 will require more rigorous warnings for products that contain chemicals the state has deemed to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has adopted new regulations in an effort to provide more meaningful and useful information about chemical exposure to the public. “I never even noticed these signs until I got involved in compliance in 2008,” says Bakalyar, the chief compliance officer at Los Angeles-based Top 40 distributor PromoShop (asi/30044...

A Tough Task for FTC: Regulating Instagram When Anyone Can Be an Influencer menu close Asset 6 Facebook1 twitter1 linkedin1 Email SVG Share Icon arrow1 arrow1 twitter1 Facebook1 linkedin1 Email SVG Share Icon twitter1 Email SVG Share Icon Facebook1 twitter1 linkedin1 Email SVG Share Icon

39% of Instagram users said they were comfortable with accounts on the platform posting ads on their profiles, while 35% said they were not comfortable with the idea. Roughly one-third said a sample of influencer posts clearly labeled or showcasing a product were not advertisements or that they were unsure or had no opinion. When Netflix Inc. and Hulu released documentaries in January detailing the fraud behind the Fyre Festival — which was propelled by glowing posts on Instagram from famous people like Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid — viewers were outraged by the deception created from posts that lacked details about financial motives. That outrage, however, hasn’t made its way to Washington, where lawmakers and regulators are instead focusing on issues of data privacy, robocalls and competition. Even though major consumer advocacy groups such as Truth in Advertising have pressed the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on what they see as deceptive advertising, they say that the agency’s lack of adequate resources and rule-making authority, as well as Instagram’s ability to blend sponsored posts seamlessly with regular posts, make it difficult to regulate ...

Vanderpump Rules is one of the best reality-television series ever filmed. It is masterful. It has provided a generation with joy and horror and Laura Leigh and laughter and sadness and the scene where Brittany plays audio of Jax having sex with Faith to an entire housewarming party. The meaninglessness of entertainment-industry awards is highlighted by the fact that it has zero to its name. For seven seasons, it has fed us. And now it is time for Vanderpump Rules to die. When Vanderpump Rules began in 2013, as a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spinoff, the core cast — Stassi, Jax, Katie, Kristen, and Tom Sandoval — worked together at SUR. Scheana did, too, though she was new to the friend group (helicoptered in from a Real Housewives controversy) and has always been somewhat on the outskirts. Tom Schwartz was also there, though he never had a job save for the half-day he bartended a party at Pump before he got overwhelmed. It was a show about the beautiful and fame-hungry, and the drama was largely trivial. Scheana put sunscreen on Jax. Jax “had relations” with someone in Las Vegas. Stassi had to mend her broken friendship with Katie. Kristen … something something. When there...

26 Cute Home Storage Products That’ll Brighten Up Your Year

Each new year brings with it a handful of emotions: some level of excitement about the months that lie ahead, a renewed sense of ambition regarding the goals on my to-do list and an immense desire to purge literally everything I own. Home storage products—specifically, cute home storage products—offer me a way to feel like I’ve done so without actually making me do so. Which is pretty much the best thing a lazy minimalist, like me, could ask for. Though receiving holiday gifts typically fills me with love, happiness and Christmas cheer—the practice also reminds me that I probably own too much stuff already, and that I could really benefit from some paring down. The new year is about new beginnings, after all, and who says my clean slate can’t start with a cleaner apartment? Wanting to Kondo my home and actually Kondoing my home are two different things, though. It’s super easy to idealize minimalism in theory; the practice of figuring out which material items I’m willing to part with is much, much harder. But, as I said before, there’s a way around this: Home storage products let me cleanse my home of clutter without forcing me to break up with any of my favorite things. Lesser-...

More than 30 Products for Law Enforcement Apparel Police Accessories and Body Armor

A law enforcement officer’s apparel, gear, accessories, body armor products were chosen for specific reasons. And those requirements vary depending on each agency and police department from sea to shining sea.  Not too long ago there was an outcry over the image of a police officer becoming too militaristic versus the traditional officer walking down Main Street handing small children a friendly pack of baseball cards. (I know I still have mine stored away somewhere in a cardboard box up in my attic.) Though, today it seems trends have veered away from a TDU / BDU to an image of their own. Patrol officers have higher-performing clothing options than ever before – all while keeping an important professional and friendly look. It’s a balancing act to put the aspects of image, practicality, and cost in check – one countless manufacturers and suppliers look to provide a great number of options.  General TacticWith a classic look and an unexpected comfort, the Long Sleeve Stretch Shirt was made from General Tactic’s 4-way stretch fabric with Polygiene, an odor control technology based on antibacterial treatment that gives you a fresh-all-day confidence that al...
