11 Best Above Ground Pools: Your Buyer’s Guide (2019)

Thinking about buying a pool? If so, we’ve got not only 11 of the best above ground pools, but also all the information you need to consider before you make your purchase. As you can probably guess, buying a pool isn’t something you want to do on an impulse. Take the time to weigh up all the pros and cons before even thinking about hitting that buy button. First things first, it’s worth taking a moment to think about a budget. Have a rough ballpark figure and go from there. While the cheaper pools will do the job, I’d personally advise against it. They’re more likely to break (or tear in most cases due to the materials that make up the outer walls), and some don’t include important elements like a filtering system to keep the pool clean. That’s not to say you need to jump from the cheapest to the most expensive, but spending a little bit extra saves you money in the long run. Next, get a rough idea of the size of your garden, preferably in feet. Larger pools are always more fun, but the last thing you want is a pool that completely covers your garden. This may sound obvious, but it’s a factor every potential pool purchaser needs to consider. Moving on, a pool needs to be kept c...

How cardiolipin modulates the dynamics of respiratory complex I

Cardiolipin modulates the activity of membrane-bound respiratory enzymes that catalyze biological energy transduction. The respiratory complex I functions as the primary redox-driven proton pump in mitochondrial and bacterial respiratory chains, and its activity is strongly enhanced by cardiolipin. However, despite recent advances in the structural biology of complex I, cardiolipin-specific interaction mechanisms currently remain unknown. On the basis of millisecond molecular simulations, we suggest that cardiolipin binds to proton-pumping subunits of complex I and induces global conformational changes that modulate the accessibility of the quinone substrate to the enzyme. Our findings provide key information on the coupling between complex I dynamics and activity and suggest how biological membranes modulate the structure and activity of proteins. Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) functions as a redox-driven proton pump in aerobic respiratory chains (1–3). With a molecular mass of ca. 1 MDa distributed among up to 45 subunits in eukaryotes (4–7), complex I is the largest, most intricate, and least understood enzyme of the respiratory chain. The over 100-Å-long hydrophi...

These stand-out homes have been named among the best in the country, and it is all

These stand-out homes have been named among the best in the country, and it is all because they offer something special when it comes to their use of materials.  Whether it is a seashell path or a home clad in a wood that is almost impossible to drill through, each of these properties has been shortlisted for the Royal British Institute of Architect’s House of the Year for their unusual approach to raw materials.  The homes across the UK are showcased in tonight’s episode of Channel 4′s Grand Designs: House of the Year and make up the final shortlist category of this year’s competition.  Presenter Kevin McCloud and the panel of judges look at extraordinary examples including an ultra-modern Arts and Crafts house in Berkshire, which stands out for its meticulously placed timber panels and precise brickwork. Elsewhere the team visit a minimalist home in Belfast, whose rugged Scottish Larch cladding earns it comparisons to a liveable shed – much to the delight of its owner.  In east London, there is a four-storey property whose owners wanted to showcase every join and process behind the build.   Scroll down for a look inside the latest crop of contend...
