Ovšem nákupem úsporného světelného zdroje šetříme kromě energie i životní prostředí. Běžná 25W žárovka totiž ročně vyprodukuje přes 10 kg CO2, zatímco LED žárovka pouze 1,26 kg. LED žárovky v tradičním i moderním stylu poskytují měkké teplé světlo a úspory energie ve výši až 84 % a extra dlouhou životnost až 40 000 hodin, tedy cca 40 let. A to nebereme v úvahu emise vzniklé výrobou žárovek, které musíme během 25 let obměňovat.

Grill or be grilled. One of South Africa’s leading manufacturers of braai’s and fireplaces invests in its equipment and facilities to cut lead times and keep up with overwhelming demand. Right now, keeping the winter cold and gloom at bay with a warming and welcoming fireplace is a priority. Nothing warms a home, literally and figuratively, quite like a flickering fire. While the flames create physical warmth, their orange glow creates a sense of comfort on a cold winter’s day or night. But with summer just around the corner, it is just about time to get the coals out, or turn on the gas, and light a match to get ready for our favourite past time – braaiing. Embrace the vleis (meat). Even if you’ve never so much as opened a pack of boerie (sausage) on your own, becoming the coveted tong-master is not as difficult as it once was. While our ancestors had to make do with uneven heat and rusty griddles, nowadays finding the tjop (meat chop) to compliment your dop (alcoholic drink) simply means slapping some spices on a fine piece of meat, sealing in the flavour and cooking it over the coals to one’s taste. Of course it doesn’t end there. In the past a braai was just another way to c...

Hidden London exhibition brings abandoned Tube stations to life

Our website uses cookies to improve your user experience. If you continue browsing, we assume that you consent to our use of cookies. More information can be found in our Cookies Policy and Privacy Policy . We speak to the designer behind the Transport Museum’s Hidden London exhibition. which recreates a “secret station subterranean world”. Hidden London looks unfinished at first. There is debris outside the entrance, made to look like a Tube station — construction signs, building materials, newspaper stands — but it is all part of the exhibition’s “deconstructed look”. Sau-Fun Mo, the museum’s head of design, says that this focus on atmosphere was her aim for the exhibition. The exhibition recreates abandoned Tube stations, like Down Street station, where Winston Churchill stayed safe in the Railway Executive Committee’s bomb-proof headquarters during the Blitz. Aldwych’s “historic ticket office” has also been recreated, aided by instantly recognisable design details such as the tiles used by Leslie Green, the English architect who put his distinctive stamp on London’s Tube stations at the turn of the century. As visitors pass through the station replicas, they can see objects,...

FTC Changes the Shape of Filtration With Launch of First Trapezoidal Liquid-solids Filter Cartridge and Vessel System

Houston-based Filtration Technology Corporation (FTC), a leader in innovative filtration and separation products and solutions, is changing the shape of the filtration and separation industry with the launch of Invicta™, the first trapezoidal liquid-solids filter cartridge and vessel system on the market. Invicta’s cutting-edge design and innovative patent-pending technology offers a significant improvement and welcome alternative to the outdated, conventional cylindrical filtration systems widely used today. The trapezoidal, coreless, and compact design allows more elements to be placed in a vessel and reduces the amount of wasted space in traditional cylindrical filter designs. This results in lower clean pressure drop, higher solids loading capacity, and longer life, which means fewer changeouts and greater overall cost savings. “Invicta has the potential to change the shape of the liquid-solids cartridge filtration industry from a performance, environmental footprint, and economic standpoint,” said FTC Vice President of Technology Chris Wallace. “With the arrival of Invicta, you no longer have to settle for outdated filtration technology.” Conventional, cylindrical filter d...

Pick the best LED light bulb in 2019 for every room in your house

Light bulbs have an enormous, everyday impact on the way our homes look and feel, and with a flood of new energy efficient LED bulbs filling the lighting aisle, you’ve got more options than ever. But how do you pick the right lights for the job? The trick is to think for a long time about how you typically put light to use in the different rooms in your home. That, more than anything, will dictate your lighting needs.  For instance, you might benefit from a super bright bulb in your favorite reading lamp, but prefer a gentler, more candlelike glow from the lamp at your bedside. To that end, here are some room-specific tips to help you zero in on the right lights — from energy-saving bulbs to CFL bulbs to LED smart bulbs to regular light bulbs — for your living space. Where appropriate, I’ve also included links to buy light bulbs from our tests — please note that CNET may get a share of revenue from those purchases. If you have rooms with high ceilings — an entryway, for instance, or maybe a staircase with overhead lights up above — you’ll want to prioritize brightness over softness in your light bulbs. After all, the higher up your...

From Tires to Toys: Not-for-profit organization uses crumb rubber to refurbish community spaces

Victoria, British Columbia — September 19, 2019 — A tire recycling organization in British Columbia is using recycled crumb rubber to better the local community and send a sustainable message. Tire Stewardship B.C. (TSBC) hosts frequent “tire round up” drives in the Okanagan, B.C. area, where drivers can donate their old tires and feel good about it. Tire Stewardship takes the tires it receives and recycles them into crumb rubber for a variety of products, including running tracks, playground surfacing or colourful, resilient flooring in recreational facilities. The materials may also be used as slip-proof flooring and mats in agricultural and industrial facilities, as well as coloured landscaping mulch. Since 1991, more than 90 million tires have been recycled — and upcycled — in British Columbia. Many of those tires have been reimagined into feature elements of more than 300 community spaces throughout the province, all created using recycled rubber supported by a TSBC grant. TSBC was founded by the Rubber Association of Canada, the Retail Council of Canada and the Western Canada Tire Dealers. In 2007 the New Car Dealers Association also joined. The not...

Last year’s iPhone was an outlier for me. Although I reviewed the then-new iPhone XS line,

Last year’s iPhone was an outlier for me. Although I reviewed the then-new iPhone XS line, the model I ultimately chose for myself was the “lesser” iPhone XR. I chose it mostly for aesthetic reasons. As much as I appreciated its well-rounded technical merits, I was downright giddy at the notion I could have an iPhone in my favorite color: blue. I’ve not once regretted my choice nearly a year later. Color aside, the XR was—and remains—a terrific device. At a fundamental level, choosing the iPhone XR was more significant than a favorite color or a willingness to accept some technical differences. As a visually impaired person, foregoing the XS meant I was purposely giving up a pivotal accessibility feature—the OLED screen—that would have made my experience with the device more accessible. In hindsight, the fact I decided on the objectively worse phone in the XR speaks volumes about how great it was as a product, and how color can spark such raw, immense delight. This year, there is no blue iPhone. Without the emotional appeal of color in the equation, I’m reminded once again why the best iPhone money can buy—the iPhone 11 Pro Max—is the best, most accessible iPhone for me. Apple ...
