Camo netting, an age-old tool, is being re-engineered for the modern battlefield

Top Army brass are looking to what seems like a simple item, camouflage netting, to solve a very modern technological problem — electronic signals that give away soldier and unit positions. A variety of camouflage being developed now is aimed at hiding electronic signatures and concealing soldiers and their equipment, masking them to the eye and hiding them from sensors in modern communications and targeting equipment. The next-generation netting is expected to offer state-of-the-art signature concealment for “multispectral protection.” The Army awarded contracts a year ago for engineering, manufacturing and developing the new Ultra-Lightweight Camouflage Net System, or ULCANS. This week, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley gave lawmakers a better understanding about what the service is after in its efforts to develop the all-weather camouflage. The key to the camouflage is the electronic signature, both from heat produced by humans and vehicles and also the invisible signature of electronic systems, Milley said at a House Appropriations Committee hearing on Army modernization. Those camo systems, from netting strung over vehicles to ghillie suits used by snipers, break up ele...

Underwear, Socks, and Other Men’s Basics That You Should Actually Gift

Let’s face it: When you’re a kid, Christmas is all about the toys, and there are few among us who considered socks a worthy present when we were young tadpoles. As you get older, though, you start to appreciate the little things in life a lot more – your favorite warm sweater, a good cup of coffee in the morning, a clean crisp T-shirt, and yes, even a well-made pair of socks or underwear that look as good as they feel. Another simple joy that many of us enjoy more as we grow up is the act of giving gifts rather than simply receiving them. Every man is always in need of basics like these (more than a few of us probably have socks and undershirts with holes in them sitting in our closets), and this sort of stuff makes for perfect small presents and stocking stuffers, especially when it’s something more thoughtful than plain old store-bought items. If you’re shopping for a gift for a guy you know or if you just need to fill up some empty space in your own sock and underwear drawers, read on: These must-have basics are anything but basic, featuring some of our favorite picks from great makers like American Trench, Flint and Tinder, and Mack Weldon. The Manual is simple —...

The General’s Buick division went all futuristic starting in the middle 1980s, hoping to win back

The General’s Buick division went all futuristic starting in the middle 1980s, hoping to win back (younger) American buyers who were switching their loyalty to high-tech European machinery at that time. The sleek Reatta two-seater came along in the 1988 model year, but the 1986 Riviera (and, to a lesser extent, the Somerset) were the first models to get the science-fiction touch. Here’s a maximum-options Riviera T-Type coupe, which came with 800-way power seats and a touchscreen computer interface, spotted in a Silicon Valley self-serve yard last month. The T-Type name first appeared on the 1981 Riviera and spread to other Buick models as the 1980s went on. T-Types had sporty badges, bucket seats, and (often) performance-oriented mechanical upgrades. All 1986 Rivieras came with digital instrument panels and the revolutionary Graphics Control Center system, which boasted a touchscreen CRT interface sourced from the same hardware used for high-end automatic teller machines of the era. These screens get grabbed pretty quickly from junkyard Buicks (and Oldsmobiles), but I already have enough GCC components to build at least one system into a car-parts boombox (the GCC system involve...

In a way, the missionary position is the physical equivalent of the old “I’m busy washing my hair” excuse—it’s the brush-off used when you’re lazy, tired, or just not that interested. But despite being one of the most passive contortions, this position can still make for pretty good workout sex. “It depends on how enthusiastic you are about it, but missionary can be great for the core muscles,” says Stacy Berman, a New York City-based certified fitness trainer and founder of Stacy’s Boot Camp. “If your partner is thrusting toward you, you want to have an equal and opposite thrust back, and that requires a lot of core strength. It actually will start burning.” Patti Britton, author of The Art of Sex Coaching and immediate past president of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, agrees that you’ll definitely be feeling it in your abs. “You can strengthen your core by focusing on pelvic lifting using your core, not your lower back. That’s where women tend to get stuck—they tend to rely on their lower back to give them propulsion.” (The risk of which isn’t ...

Femtosecond laser processing of metal and plastics in the medical device industry

In recent years, ultrashort femtosecond laser technology has been introduced, which produces pulses that leave no thermal fingerprint on the part. Microsecond fiber lasers have been used successfully for medical device applications in hypo tube and stent cutting for many years. While precise and fast, the downside has been that the parts require a number of post-processing operations after they are cut, which adds significantly to part cost and can also damage mechanically delicate parts. In recent years, ultrashort femtosecond laser technology has been introduced, which produces pulses that leave no thermal fingerprint on the part. These disk-based femtosecond lasers offer sub-400fs pulses, plus best-in-class beam quality and peak power that enable an extremely high-quality cold ablation cutting process rather than a melt ejection process. Therefore, the resulting cut requires minimal post-processing and the smaller beam size allows machining of very fine details. The process works especially well for production of such medical devices as catheters, heart valves, and stents, as well as in other medical glass cutting and marking applications and in 3D structuring of ceramic mate...

The hardest part of indoor cycling classes isn’t the climbs. It’s avoiding the many variables (seat height! resistance! posture!) that could mess with your form, efficiency, and overall workout. Whether you’re new to cycling or are a spinning master, it’s pretty easy to mess up a few aspects of this killer exercise—and you might not even realize it. To make sure you’re working the muscles you’re supposed to work and preventing an injury, avoid making the mistakes that spin instructors see all too often. (Wait, is indoor cycling actually a good workout?) Your pants are too loose. Leave the baggy sweats at home—form-fitting leggings are your best bet on the bike, says Marion Roaman, general manager of Peloton Cycle. “Though most bikes are designed so fabric cannot get caught in the crank arm, it’s annoying to have clothes flailing around while you are riding to the rhythm,” she says. “Not to mention cycling is such a sweaty workout—the last thing you want is extra fabric hanging from your body.” Your sports bra is weak. Sure, a spinning (btw not all classes use Spinning bikes—a trademarked brand) exercise class is ...
